Happy Birthday, Aunt Betty!
Today is a very special day. My Aunt Betty turns 100 today. You read that right–100. She’s my father’s oldest sister and the last surviving sibling. Because my grandmother was diabetic and often ill, Betty became my father’s second mother. (Dad was the youngest boy.) This summer we celebrated her birthday in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It was a rousing time with a reception for her. She is universally loved and admired, and people came from as far away as Guam. She received close to 200 birthday cards, which she reads over and over. She’s still as spry as they come, witty, funny , and simply fun to be with. Beware if she asks you to play cards–she plays for money, and she takes it seriously. Make sure you bring cash! She has all her faculties and only takes one pill a day. Yup, that’s just the way I want to be when I turn 100 . . . just like my Aunt Betty. Happy Birthday, Aunt Betty!!!
