My love for Cameos
<< All ArticlesI’m not sure when or why I became fascinated with cameos. It could be because they are carved from sea shells and I’ve always loved being close to the ocean. I purchased my first cameo while in Italy, as a gift for my editor. Sometime later I saw several at an antique show and was struck by the workmanship and the understated beauty. I discovered I liked the larger ones and wore them as necklaces. Over the years I’ve managed to collect about fifty cameos, some antique, some new. They are my most treasured pieces of jewelry.

Dear Ms. Macomber:
I do hope this email finds you and finds you well.
I am a 69 year old married man that found comfort, happiness and solace in view your fantastic series Cedar Cove.
Each chapter in Seasons 1 through 3 brought to me a break in the daily experience of working and living.
That is why I was so surprised and disappointed to learn that a fourth season was not forthcoming.
Thank you much for the opportunity of viewing your fine series.
Respectfully yours,
Eugene Hidalgo

I have been fascinated by cameos since I was a teenager (well over 50 years ago). I wanted a cameo ring desperately for Christmas – I had a particular one picked out but my parents picked a different one. I came to love it but always missed the one I had really wanted. I have a few cameos that I have collected over the years. The original ring was lost, unfortunately, but something I would really like to replace. I loved the fact that they were carved out of seashells.

I bought my first cameo while on my honeymoon. I found dainty earrings in a jewelry shop at the base of the Pompeii ruins. I treasure them.

I collect shot glasses. They are cheap, easy to pack and some are very interesting looking. I’m not sure how many I have but it’s over 100. My favorites are a cut etched glass from Ireland and a glass that leans from Pisa.
I, too, like cameos. I got a very nice cameo ring when we were in Naples.

I collect vintage Barbies and vintage Barbie clothes. I started a few years ago when I guess I was recreating things I owned as a child. I really got into the names of the outfits and wonderful memories they brought back. I learned that vintage beats reproduction, although I bought some reproduction dolls to dress in the outfits. I also have collected some small Shirley Temple dolls. I loved her movies when I was growing up.

Me too! I only have one authentic, but a dozen or more synthetic. Nice to know we have something else in common, besides knitting, reading and faith.

I too love them, I had one when I was younger and it was a cheap piece but still very pretty. I had a black and white face with a cheap gold chain. lol I say cheap because it made my skin turn green. eww!! Oh well you have to take what you can when you don’t have money for the good stuff. lol

I only have one cameo, but it is very special. It was my grandmother’s, then my mother’s and when my mother passed it became mine. I will pass it on to my daughter and then maybe it will be passed down to my oldest granddaughter.

I was hoping to learn more about cameos since I read about them in one of your books. Is there an online store you like? What do we look for when choosing a cameo?

I collect snowmen ornaments. I started collecting them when I moved from the north down to southern FL. I thought it was fun to say “Let It Snow” when you lived in a place it did not snow. I have so many that I put up a “Winter” tree in December that stays up till March. It has sleds and ice skates and, of course, snowmen and snowwomen!
PS. I now do live where it sometimes snows!

I received a set of cameo earrings and a cameo broach from my grandmother via my father. My grandmother passed away 3 days after I had been born. I never got to know my grandmother but these are very special to me. I feel as though she is near to me especially when I wear them.

I collect things that have OHIO on them. I grew up in Clifton– Cedarville area in SW Ohio. A special little place with lots of history. A little place I liked to call Kansas — there’s no place like home. So when my husband and I moved to Pennsylvania I found this wall paper order that said “there’s no place like home”. So I put it up in my craft room and then the collection of OHIO began. Pictures of barns with OHIO on them, crocks, towels, mugs and plates, pillows and blankets and more.

Hello, I have one cameo, bought for me, by my first husband, before we were married in 1966. I don’t know why I have kept it all of these years, but I do cherish it. I imagine we could now say, we are both antiques. lol
I collect Irish Belleek pottery. I have about 50 pieces and I love how delicate each one is, and green being my favorite colours, means I love each and every one. It’s calming and restorative to me, when I can hold up a vase to the sun and see the sun shining through.
Thank you for your many amazing books and I look forward to seeing you, this coming October.
Best wishes to you and yours, Carol

I started collecting Fenton Glass two years ago. It’s beautiful to look at and I really appreciate the work put forth to make each piece.
I also collect vintage art, and medium. Hardback books ,new and old. Vintage (fine) jewelry. Needless to say I don’t have much jewelry. Lastly I collect stray animals.
Debbie, a few months ago I posted a couple of vintage sterling silver charm bracelets I made and you helped me out by selecting which one you thought my mother would prefer. Thank you for that and you were correct!

On an occasion when I met my husband’s great aunt before we were married, I looked around and saw lots of salt and pepper shaker sets in a cupboard. Among them was a crystal bell. I did not say anything about it. When we got ready to leave she went and got the bell and placed it in the palm of my hand and said I think you should keep the bell. It belonged to my husband’s grandmother. It was made in an abbey in Belgium. Since then, almost for 50 years now, I have been collecting bells, from travels, from friends and family. I have over 300 now. They mean a lot to me and it all started with a crystal bell from a very special lady. I miss her.
