Cooking for Others
A reader recently asked me what I’ve been reading, and I mentioned Richard LeMieux’s book, BREAKFAST AT SALLY’S, which is his tale of homelessness. Richard’s enlightening book changed my entire perspective of the homeless–who they are, how they wind up homeless, and the challenges they face.
After reading his book, Wayne and I felt we wanted to do something to help the homeless, but it’s a daunting undertaking. How does one go about helping? Then an opportunity came our way when we
attended a charity auction dinner held for a local family homeless shelter near our home in Florida.
At the dinner the organizers asked for volunteers to come in and cook dinner for the homeless for one night. We volunteered, and the date was set. Wayne helped me cook my famous macaroni and cheese (see Cedar Cove Cookbook for the recipe!), and our friend Rhett Palmer, a local radio personality, cooked his favorite meatloaf. Rhett and I delivered and served the meals.
It was a wonderful, wonderful experience. I hope you enjoy the photo of Rhett and me showing off our cooking skills.
If you want to help the homeless in your community, I suggest you contact your local shelter and inquire what you can do.
