I have a small confession to make…
<< All ArticlesI have a small confession to make. I don’t do well with scary or tense movies. The pounding music, the terrible stress of not knowing what’s going to happen next gets to me. I plug my ears, close my eyes, bend over and plant my face on my knees. Wayne nearly broke up with me after our first tragic movie together, The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen. My behavior mortified him. At the worst possible moment, I’d find a desperate need to rush to the restroom so I wouldn’t have to watch the scariest part of the movie. Fear grips me. I’m much too sensitive. These days Wayne gently pats my back and tells me when it’s safe to look again.

I’m so with you on scary movies, Debbie. Fortunately, my husband doesn’t like them either. So, you are not alone in fear of scary movies.
March 29th, 2016 at 8:50 pm
I’m with you, Debbie, which is why I love your books so much and careful what I read. Do not watch/read news. Keep your wonderful stories coming!
March 29th, 2016 at 8:51 pm
I don’t even watch a movie like that hate then can’t do haunted houses. Both terrify me too much so I only watch positive non violent movies. Figure if I want to know about hatred and violence turn on Fox new channel or CNN

I’m with you on scary movies. I hate them. I don’t like scary books either, I’m a whimp. Haha. I love your books, I’ve read. I have a kindle, so I read all the time.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:08 pm
Right there with you Debbie! I remember seeing the movie MASH when it came out and shut my eyes a lot. I loved the show mash but the movie did me in.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:08 pm
Debbie I Dont watch scary movies at all. If Ryan end up watching one and Dont tell me till I found out there be popcorn all over him!!!! And I also be screaming..
I love reading your books the best more than anything..
March 29th, 2016 at 9:10 pm
Omg, I drive my husband crazy with the same issue. I always have to ask what’s going to happen next just because I can’t handle watching it. I don’t want to be left out of the loop but I dont’t want to see it for myself either. So depending on what the show is or how often I cover my eyes and ask the questions, depends on the response I will get from my husband. It can go either way, comfort followed by laughter or irritation and teasing. Lol.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:16 pm
I agree with Alice. That is why I enjoy your books. I have read almost everything you have written. It is the way I am trying to write my books. I read to relax, not get tensed up.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:23 pm
I am the same, my family know that I will only watch “nice” films. The same goes for the books I read which is what got me reading your books Debbie. Each one takes me out of myself and into different communities and following the lives of characters I feel I know.
Life is too short to waste time watching films we don’t enjoy.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:29 pm
Debbie you are so not alone. In fact had just shared with a close neighbor this morning while we were trying ro decide on a movie to watch. I’m probably worse than you on my actions. 🙂
Thanks for sharing.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:32 pm
I am the same way. I don’t do scary at all. Suspense I can handle.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:44 pm
I feel the same way. Too stressful to me to
watch a scary movie. I will cover my eyes!
Good thing the Hallmark channel is going
strong!
March 29th, 2016 at 9:45 pm
I have claustrophobia and I am terrified of heights. I can hardly stand the feelings I get when I watch trapeze artists. I have to grip the chair arms because it helps me stay grounded. I praise God that when I die, He will change me in the twinkling of an eye and I won’t have those fears anymore. I also read books that make me feel happy (yours always do) and I only watch movies that give me enjoyment-not sadness or fear.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:49 pm
I understand you 100% I don’t like scary or violent movies.
That is why I love your books, I can have a good sound sleep after reading.
March 29th, 2016 at 9:51 pm
Goodness, surely it didn’t take him that long to learn. Ha ha
It does not require a confession. Nor should it be mortifying.
If we all liked the same movies, how boring would it be?
March 29th, 2016 at 9:56 pm
I am the same with those type of movies. I could not stay in the movie theater at the end of Braveheart–it was too real and intense. Just couldn’t bear watching him be tortued.
March 29th, 2016 at 10:02 pm
I have never liked scary movies, but my daughter lovrs them. Don’t know who she took after on this one lol
March 29th, 2016 at 10:07 pm
I went to an outdoor movie showing of “Jaws” and used my baby girl as an excuse to keep leaving the car, to go to the concession stand, to warm up her bottle, change her diaper, I had to use the restroom myself, etc…
Those type of movies give me nightmares!
March 29th, 2016 at 10:07 pm
I do not think you need to confess. I am the same way. I totally concur with Lisa and Alice! lOve and need happy endings with all the stress and unrest in the world. tHanks for your books!!!!
March 29th, 2016 at 10:20 pm
I decided to get over the same fears by writing The Gingrich Curse. I scared myself SO badly, I will never write another Christian Horror. I am NO Stephen King.
I advise my fearless son to NOT put that stuff into His brain regarding Horror films. It took years to get over the site of Dr. Lechtor eating someone’s brains. I saw all of one second before I buried my head into my husband’s shoulder. Haven’t watched anything remotely scary since. Of course, I get tensed up watching equestrian jumping and downhill skiing too. Sigh. I’m a wimp. ?
March 29th, 2016 at 10:21 pm
I’ll be in the ladies room with you!
I only watch musicals and comedies.
I don’t need drama. I have children.

I used to love scary movies when I was a teen. Now, not so much. I totally get where you ate coming from now.
March 29th, 2016 at 10:39 pm
I totally agree, I am not a fan of intense movies of any kind, even the kids movies. I remember when I went to see The Birds, I spent most of the movie in the lobby. I prefer comedy, romance and maybe a light mystery. That is why I like your books, and have read every one of them. Keep em coming.
March 29th, 2016 at 10:39 pm
I hate scary movies too. I hate the feeling of fear. I don’t watch them at all. If there’s a scary part in a movie, I cover my eyes too.
March 29th, 2016 at 10:45 pm
I do not like them either, Debbie. Love all your books! Keep on writing them!
March 29th, 2016 at 10:52 pm
I FEEL THE SAME…..I MUTE THE CONTROL BUTTON.
March 29th, 2016 at 10:57 pm
I don’t like watching scary movie either but quite okay with tense movie. I used to close my eyes during my movie time with my family when I was a kid, but now I am totally fine because I can choose my own movie to watch. Happy that you are blessed with a husband 🙂
March 29th, 2016 at 11:04 pm
That is not anything new to me. There are dozens of movies I haven’t been able to watch because they are way… too… tense and scary. I still plug my ears and close my eyes. The nice thing about watching them at home you can skip over those parts really fast.
March 29th, 2016 at 11:11 pm
I do not do well with suspense thrillers myself. Went on a date to see “Who’s Afraid of The Dark”. At that moment {everyone knows this moment} when the guy jumps out, the entire theater screams. I screamed but I also threw my arm over and hit my date in the face!! Yikes. Yes, we went out again but only for about six weeks. Who can blame him??
March 29th, 2016 at 11:21 pm
This feeling contributes to who you are and why you write such wonderful books.who would you be without it?
March 29th, 2016 at 11:23 pm
I’m with you on the scary movie or even TV. I close my eyes and cover them,as if I could see through my closed eyes. I don’t hide this fact from anyone, it is what it is.
March 30th, 2016 at 12:53 am
I feel the same, turn my head. Bury my face in my hands ,get up leave the room ! If I am in the theatre I cover my eyes !
March 30th, 2016 at 1:45 am
I was waiting in line with friends to see THE EXORCIST, when I made the sudden decision to never watch anything scary again. I decided I didn’t want to feel my brain any more fearful things. Almost 50 years later and it was the best decision I ever made.
March 30th, 2016 at 1:56 am
I’m with you.
March 30th, 2016 at 3:56 am
I am exactly the same way, so I just don’t go to scary movies – NOT EVER. Not only do they scare me while they are happening, but I have nightmares about them for long afterward. If my husband wants to watch a scary movie, he goes with someone else or by himself.
March 30th, 2016 at 4:07 am
I completely agree! I have been a nurse since I was 19 years old, almost 30 years. I have seen so much real life death and trauma, I can’t stand to watch it in movies!
March 30th, 2016 at 4:24 am
So glad l’m not the only one too sensitive for this world. Thank you for the ‘common ground’ confession.
March 30th, 2016 at 4:24 am
So glad to know l am not the only one too sensitive for this world. Thank you for the ‘common ground’ confession.
March 30th, 2016 at 4:34 am
I am just like that. The first movie we went to after we were engaged ( as a celebration, of course), was a war movie. There was so much blood and gore that I saw two scenes, and my fingers were sore from plugging my ears. And, of course, my back hurt because I was bent over the whole time.
March 30th, 2016 at 4:50 am
I am so much like that!! Scary movies gave me nightmares for weeks after seeing them. Haven’t seen ine for almost 40 years now. Decided to put my foot down & just say no! Lol. So my hubby & son see the
scary ones.
March 30th, 2016 at 5:30 am
I was traumatized by being in a slaughter house where my very disfunctional grandfather took me when I was 4 or 5. I REALLY can’t watch any torture or scary scenes in movies. I had horrible nightmares for 20 years until I finally figured out what they were from.
Nope, I’m with you. God says whatever is good, think on these things.

I don’t like horror or war movies and I always enjoy your books because I know there won’t be anything tasteless or scary in them. You are the best and I wish I had half of your talent. Since I was little I could tell a story in my mind but to write it down takes so much effort.
March 30th, 2016 at 1:37 pm
Lol, I love this confession!! I hate scary movies too. My husband doesn’t like the scary ones (thank goodness) but he does like action/guy movies (which can also be tense for me, lol) I find myself warning the characters out loud, but they NEVER listen! it gives my husband a good chuckle. I’m blessed with a husband who will also tell me when to look. lol
March 30th, 2016 at 5:43 pm
Ironic that the theme of Romance Novels includes loss, sometimes in nasty ways, yet the author who can’t watch a movie with the same story line, writes similar story lines.
My wife, Judy, who was very much like Debbie, hating any kind of violence and even yelling which made life a bit difficult as my passion was almost always interpreted as anger, a reaction that occasionally caused anger.
We went through an “experiential learning” program called Lifespring, where the process was based on ‘breaking down and rebuilding’ and the results were phenomenal. I experienced change that had nothing at all to do with the sessions.
Many moons later, it occurred to me that the process is called Basic Training in the military and, for those who saw G. I. Jane or the TV documentaries on SEAL training we can see that the process creates the warrior. Since then, I have learned to embrace it and look forward to the little pain creating a better me.
So, Debbie, join the Navy and become a SEAL! …. 😉
March 31st, 2016 at 5:19 am
I am with you too. My husband doesn’t care for them either.
March 31st, 2016 at 8:17 am
I feel the same way hate scarey movies a lot.
March 31st, 2016 at 1:42 pm
I know what you mean. When I was younger I tried to do hunted houses but could not do them they freak me out so bad when I did one I had to get my mom because I couldn’t move any more to complete it. So I don’t do them any more or scary movies what so ever. My favorite are your books and movies and t.v . series on the Hallmark channel. I can’t wait for cedar cove to come on this season and more books to read.
April 6th, 2016 at 8:08 pm
Totally with you on this one!
April 7th, 2016 at 5:58 pm
I am not a fan of scary movies or TV shows myself. When I was a teenager I would watch them with my twin sister, now she loved scary movies. The last time I watched scary moves was with my son (he loves them) a few years back. I kept telling myself “It’s not real…it’s not real…” LOL! One movie I had to watch how it was made before I could watch it. LOL! Thank goodness for DVD’s! Now that my is in his 30’s I don’t need to watch whatever he is watching. LOL! <:0)
April 7th, 2016 at 6:05 pm
I agree with you. I don’t do horror movies. I don’t like the feelings it puts me through. The jumping out my skin the rapid heart. Nope just to much. My Husband (dodohead) Loves the walking dead , and thinks it is funny I won’t watch it. He talks about it all the time and I have No clue what he is talking about and don’t want to know.
April 7th, 2016 at 8:55 pm
I can’t watch any of those types of movies….or even read books with those scenes. While visiting with a friend, I lamented that I wished there was a good movie to see. Quietly, he replied, “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure …… etc.” (Philippians 4:8) Enough said……as one of the other comments posted, we can watch all that scary stuff on national TV news during what Used to be called “Family Hour.”
April 7th, 2016 at 9:25 pm
Totally on board with you Debbie!!! I don’t blood, guts or scary!!!! If I want to see this I can watch the evening news? Can’t wait for your adult coloring book have preordered it:))) blessings
April 7th, 2016 at 9:28 pm
Dear Debbie I hate scary and violent [or as they are called action movies! I totally understand your feelings on this. IM GLAD YOU HAVE THIS SPOT FOR COMMENTS THIS MONTH AS I KEEP SAYING I’m GOING TO WRITE AND LET YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I ENJOY YOUR BOOKS AND ALSO ENJOYED THECEDAR COVE SERIES ON TV. It was great. Keep writing Debbie , God has given you a real gift there. May God bless! One of your many many fans, Rita Stevens Princeton, Fl

I love your books. I had never been to the west coast. Thanks to your books we have spent many years at L
Lake Crescent. We always spend one night in your town before going on to our destination.
Thanks for the wonderful vacations we have had in the west.
April 8th, 2016 at 1:30 am
I totally empathize with you! The stress from tense/scary/high stess movies is too much! I don’t enjoy them at all. Nightmare!!!
April 10th, 2016 at 4:25 am
My sisters still tease me for hiding behind the sofa when the flying monkeys came down to chase Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Or Lassie – Lassie was the worst – something bad happened EVERY week! (and I’m 64 years old now!!) I personally think that scary movies do something to change our DNA (ok call me a conspiracy theorist, but what if I’m right) I don’t watch them if I can help it.
